Mangrove Forest - Sitiawan.

Sitiawan was a shorter form of Setia Kawan which means Loyal Friend.

Legend has it in, that there was a river where 2 large elephants drowned, (back in the old days, elephants are used as a transportation means to carry tin ore) one of the elephant got stuck in the mud of the river at low tide. Efforts to help save the elephant were in vain and everyone gave up and left. However, the second elephant refused to budge and hung on to its friend, resulting in them drowning together in the rising tide. Thus the 'setia kawan' name was derived.

Sitiawan a small town in state of Perak, where in the old days its settlements works in the rubber tapping industry and also fishing by the sea as main economic activity. Tourism has not been a major economic activity, but the town centre derives some economic advantages from its close proximity to Pangkor Island which is a famous niche tourist destination.

On our recent trip to Sitiawan, for Chinese New Year celebration, which was my father's hometown, thats why we go back every year. We visit the new and improved MANGROVE FOREST RESERVE - Taman Paya Bakau. Free entry.

Pics of mangrove on a low tide. It's a shady area best viewed while eating ice cream.

You will walk along this high rise bridge/corridor, when the tide is high it still wouldnt overflow.
