Actually, Takashi Murakami (村上隆) was the guy Edison talked about. I notice his pic in NYC was a similar one I saw in Seattle last week. I couldn't take any picture since cameras were forbidden in the gallery. The only difference is that the one I saw seem brighter than the one NYC.
Please refer to this Wikipedia article of Takashi Murakami:

I bought several novels written by Haruki Murakami, and still pending to read them this summer.

Hi Alex,
u bought haruki murakami 村上春樹 too??? cooooll~~ i hv this weirdest feeling that only, probably gemini could understand murakami! im not jk, when i read his book, i saw my thoughts and my destiny unfold..LOL~
ok, thats not suppose to sound creepy. i first read the translated version, in mandarin mostly and i was hooked, my favorite had to be 听风的歌, i read it so many times and i copied the words cos it resonate so strongly! I read both mandarin and english version of 'Kafka by the Shore' 海边的卡夫卡, i honestly think taiwanese translation are much better than the english one. Of cos, everybody will strongly recommend 'Norwegian Wood' 挪威的森林, honestly, that was only so-so for me :)
he's the only author which i spent more time to read more than one of his work, hahaha~ enjoy!~
Hello Fei Wen,
Hai. Actually, I hardly read books written by 村上春樹, only his essays or short stories. But I will read the books you quoted earlier, which I haven't purchased them yet. I will seek them tomorrow at a nearby Chinese bookstore.
I got 「開往中國的慢船」, 「 懷念的一九八零年代」and 「日出國的工場」. But I will buy 「海邊的卡夫卡」tomorrow. When it comes to Japanese novels or any other publications, I always look for the Taiwanese translation first and then English, since Formosa has much Japanese influence whereas its translators are more integrated in Japanese culture. (Most of them stayed in Japan for a while) Plus those translators tend to add clear details for readers to understand deeper details in Japanese culture. Even though there are many keen Japanese-English translators, they may not explain in an "Asian" way, as they need to double translate a word or description in order to seek a Western equivalent; which may not give me an image of an Asian element due to the fact I was educated in a Chinese school while raised in the Far East.
I guess we Geminis can split many interests into our heads. It is like a bipolar personality in our souls where we can see much relativity in all elements or matters. After years in academia and art community, any reading of a literature gives me unlimited links to my past readings or experience, and it gives me much joy than ever.
Frankly, I have never been so artistic or even "surreal" in my mind until I took "art and literature" as an elective course in my old art school, Emily Carr Institute, which was one of my favorite subject. Despite my fondness to surrealism as one of my inspirations in arts, my mind would never be the same until I read Kafka and James Joyce. Their writings are unbelievable, so surreal. (Also Yukio Mishima 三島由紀夫, I saw a film about this him, and I am still pending of his book)
Admittedly, I am a "Japanophile." in which I love Japanese culture with profound admiration. So I would tend to read Japanese literatures, (whetehr in Chinese or English) be it a book or a manga. (Ozamu Tezuka 手塚治虫 and Kenshi Hirokane 弘兼憲史 are my favorite mangaka)
Right now, I am reading a Mainland Chinese novel, 許三觀賣血記 and also a biography about Chairman Mao by Jung Chang... Ah! I better keep myself awake every night before I can read Murakami novels!!! :(
Like what you said earlier in response to Edison's blog entry, I also would love to take Japanese too, but not much time are given as I have many priorities. Also I would love to take many other languages too: French, Vietnamese, Thai, Bahasa and Hokkienese... Maybe I should be a "jack of all trades and master of nothing." :p
Alex
怀念1980年代was the one that i'm missing, i cant seem to recall, and now u've mentioned it, it comes close to 听风的歌 in my fav book list. lol~
